When it comes to the never ending conversation of not having enough time for things - I've found one thing massively helpful. To Just DO rather than thinking about doing. The biggest reason for this is when we start thinking about all that has to be done - the tasks seem to grow in size and seem insurmountable. But instead, if we focus on just doing one thing at a time and keep moving, things just get done and we get this tremendous feeling of accomplishment rather than dread. Do you ever feel this way?
I started out this morning feeling the sense of dread and the conversation in my head went a little like this: "Oh my gosh I have so much to catch up on after the long weekend. We have no food in the fridge to cook - how am I going to cook healthy for everyone for the next three weeks before vacation if we have no food in the fridge? I have to make L's doc appointment and call all those doctors and see if they take our insurance and find the right one...And there is SO much laundry sitting in my closet, and that box just needs to get unpacked so I can finally finish setting up the living room, and then I have to cook dinner for the ENTIRE week and then I have to workout..." Notice how everything seems 10x bigger in that line of thought because I was thinking about three weeks and one week out instead of just today? Well, once I wrote down everything that was on my mind, I started tackling things one by one, rather than continuing to think about everything.
The actions went something like this: I made my grocery list while putting breakfast together for the kids, went to the store after school drop off, came home and called doctors while I unpacked the groceries. I threw in the laundry and after making myself a scrambled egg burrito for breakfast, I unpacked that pesky box that was sitting in my living room. I broke down all the boxes in the garage, threw the laundry into the dryer, made a list of all the meals I will be cooking and what we will all be eating this week for dinner, and now I'm sitting down to get some work done. It's not all so much. I will still make it to my 12 o'clock workout class before getting the kids home from school and cooking dinner. And best of all, I feel like I got a lot done! And I did - all before noon. Point is - tasks often grow in size when they are in our mind, but when we just put the thoughts down on paper and start taking action - doing rather than thinking - it all gets done and it's not as bad as we thought. I like writing things down before doing as well - that way it doesn't have to all be on my mind and I can just check things off as I go down the list.
As my 2 year old likes to say: "Ta Da! All done!!"
This applies to our health goals too. When we feel like we have so many things we have to do in order to reach that ideal weight or get to where we want to be, it can feel like the tasks are overwhelming and insurmountable. But when you break it down, step by step, and start taking action rather than thinking about it all, things GET DONE. You can reach your health goals, one step at a time. The key is taking action rather than just thinking about it. And having a plan with steps to get there.
