It's the end of another year, and as I reflect back, I realize how much I have to be thankful for. We moved to a beautiful new home in a new town, we are all relatively healthy (besides the colds that my children keep bringing home from school), and I'm lucky to have such wonderful family and friends. We had some quality family time recently on vacation, and although it was fun spending time in the warm sun on the beach and in the pool, I also realized how thankful I am for the routine we have at home..with school for both the kids which allows me to have some time for work, and for myself. 24-7 with two children is absolutely exhausting and really leaves little time for anything else during waking hours. Finding balance during this holiday has been challenging, but I have tried my best to enjoy the time with the family, and then prioritize exercise and self-care in the little time that I could find. I know that I start to spiral downwards if I do not make time to regularly exercise, shower and find a few moments of stillness through breathing or meditation. And I know that spiral leads to nowhere good, and definitely doesn't allow for me to be the mother and wife and person that I need or want to be in the world. Which brings me to thinking about this new year.
I'm not a big fan of resolutions. I don't like the idea of making a promise to myself that is hard to keep or that I will eventually break and which will then lead to disappointment. That's why, instead, this year I'm continuing to focus on small, incremental lifestyle changes and HABITS. I've found over this past year that if I can commit to making something a habit by focusing on doing it everyday or as often as necessary, I can make real change happen. That's how I've been able to improve my health over the last year, and that's how I intend to continue to do so. Starting next week, I have committed to an 80-day exercise and nutrition program, which involves 30-60 minute workouts everyday, as well as eating as cleanly as possible. I love the idea of this challenge and the set amount of time. I have joined an accountability group with others who are also doing the same program, which will help keep me on track. If I can commit to it and focus on it for 80 days, I know I will be taking steps towards forming healthier habits and incremental lifestyle changes. The process not only makes me stronger and healthier, but it also sets an example for my children and my husband and helps everyone around me focus on and prioritize their health. I'm looking forward to the challenge and can't wait to get started!
